Plot 88

Some of you might remember that when I first took on The Warren we tried our luck at growing vegetables on our flat roof above the restaurant. This, as so many people said was a BAD IDEA for sooooo many reasons, so we soon focussed on growing vegetables back in the ground where they like to be. I then soon realised that growing food, on top of setting up a restaurant, was a bit too much, so I put this idea on the back burner…. until now! Introducing… Project #3: “Plot 88” - A Community Allotment project set in the heart of Carmarthen’s Five Field Allotments.

First things first, this is an offshoot project from Cegin Hedyn, and its primary goal is to produce food for the community kitchen. I look at The Warren as the parent to Cegin Hedyn with lots more experience, resources & connections to help get new projects off the ground.

With land becoming more and more scarce I want this space to be available to people who don’t have access to growing their own - for whatever barrier that might be.

Last Monday was the first soft launch “volunteer day” where, after our team briefing, half of us started tackling the brambles, sorting through rubbish & identifying any plants hidden in the undergrowth, while the other half set up our temporary camp kitchen, lit the fire & got lunch prepared for the volunteers.

After lunch a new wave of enthusiasm turned up, and we started to take down the wooden shed to get the ball rolling for our up-cycled pallet shed, build by patron Stuart Atkin, the talented carpenter who is responsible for the gorgeous wooden signage on the gate at Cegin Hedyn.

I feel it was a hugely successful & productive first day which I’ve been glowing from all week!

Thanks to all the bodies that voluntered & to Rhys Cannon for the photography!
