  • Calon Wen is a small co-operative of organic family farms across Wales. We believe in providing exceptional organic milk, cheese and butter that taste great and are sustainably produced.

  • Our home is in Ammanford in south west Wales, a post industrial community where Anthracite coal (Black Gold) fueled the local economy. Back in 2003 the last of the collieries closed and with it went our town’s purpose. Coaltown’s ambition was to bring a new industry to our home, a new Black Gold, a new purpose. In 2018 we achieved just that and our town is producing again.

    This time it’s a new Black Gold—Coffee.

  • Originally from Bardi in the Northern Italian hills above Parma, the Conti family "followed the wood" landing in Wales in the 1930s. At that time Italy was selling wood felled from its' forests to help its failing economy. The straight, tall trees made ideal timber for shoring up the then thriving mines of South Wales.

To avoid starvation boys as young as 11 walked with the wood and sang for their supper along the gruelling journey to their new home. Artillio Conti was just 13 when he made the journey.

  • Our Milk comes from Carmarthenshire, Cwm Farm Dairy are one of the only farms left in Wales who rear the animals, milk & bottle all on one site.

  • In the glorious Aeron Valley for 45 years they have been growing produce organically, selling at local and Cardiff farmers’ markets plus a Cardiff box scheme.

  • Nick Saltmarsh, Josiah Meldrum and William Hudson founded Hodmedod in 2012 to supply beans and other products from British farms.

We work with British farms to source a range of top quality ingredients and delicious foods. We’re particularly interested in searching out less well-known foods, like the fava bean – grown in Britain since the Iron Age but now almost forgotten – and black badger peas.

  • Stroud Brewery established in 2006, initially the brewery was a passion project for our founder Greg Pilley; an adventurer, environmentalist and beer lover. His purpose was simply to make great tasting beers for the local community whilst being the change he wanted to see in the business world.

Today Stroud Brewery is a thriving enterprise and our tap room has become one of Stroud’s cherished local landmarks. We make great tasting, ethical and organic beer and we create welcoming, fun social spaces.

  • Manifesto

Our commitment is to procure fish and shellfish that have been caught with as little damage to the marine environment as possible, have contributed to the livelihood of small scale fishers and their communities and are of exceptional quality.

Traceability: We know all our fishers and can trace your fish back to their boat.

Quality: All our fish is iced at sea to ensure the fish reaches you in peak condition, and where applicable blast chilled before freezing.

Fishing methods: All our boats are under 10 meters long. We use rod and line, static gill and trammel nets and mid-water trawls for shoaling species such as sardine or herring. Some of the flat fish species may occasionally be caught using light-weight bottom trawl, the gear does not impact or plough the seabed, the vessels carry low horse-power engines, and cover ground that is not coral or rock identified on the netters through VMS tracking and, over time, habitat mapping. We have documented substantial data and video footage which will become publicly available and is worked on in collaboration with local universities.

Discards: We do not discard any fish unless we are legally obliged, and we refuse to replicate the wide spread practise of high grading. We believe that every fish has a value. We take all the landings from the fisherman, even those that hitherto have been of low value or discarded, matching your demand to the catch, to avoid incentivising discarding, not the catch to the market which incentivises such.

Community owned: Our fisherman are paid an agreed price rather than market price and because the trading company is a Community Interest Company that the fishers own, profits go back into their fishing communities.

Fair prices: We provide the fishers fish to your plate at a true cost, not at the expense of the sea. Instead of low-impact fishers receiving prices that are governed by the landings of the highly commercial factory vessels, we agree a fair price in advance. This means that even if the price on the market is very low because many fish have been landed, the low impact fishers are still rewarded. We are thereby creating a mechanism to reward good practise and preserve the ecology of the sea.

Social: We believe in playing a role in keeping the skills of the inshore small-scale fisher intact, and that by guaranteeing them a fair prices and supporting sustainable fishing practices we are safe-guarding the productive future of our seas. The population of small-scale fishers in the UK has fallen from close to 10,000 to around 2,500 in just ten years, and the average age of a fisher is in the mid-50s. Our concern is that if we don’t reward these fishers for fishing with sensitivity to our seas, their knowledge will be lost forever.

Carbon emissions: Our static-net fishers use relatively less fuel per kilo of fish than trawl caught fish. Passive fishing methods typically use 0.1 – 0.4 litres of fuel per kilo as compared to 0.5 – 1.5 litres for beam trawled caught fish.

Fair play: We will campaign on the behalf of the disparate small-scale fishers on the basis that quota should be allocated according to environmental and social considerations as well as economic as newly required under Article 17 of the Common Fisheries Policy.

  • In 1981, our co-founders, John, Patrice and Paula came to Wales from their native Holland with dreams of setting up a centre for learning organic farming and self-sufficiency.

They bought Glynhynod Farm (meaning Remarkable Valley in Welsh) and set to work realising their vision. Soon after arriving at the farm Patrice, who trained as a cheesemaker in Holland, started making wonderful raw milk cheese. Based on a 500 year old Gouda recipe, it is the very same cheese that we make today and is named after the nearby river Teifi, a tributary of which runs through the farm.

Having started in 1982 we are now the longest established artisan cheesemaker in Wales.

Today the farm and family businesses are run by John and Patrice’s two sons; John-James and Robert, who are carrying on their parents’ vision for the farm and Caws Teifi Cheese.

  • Imagine a workplace with no bosses, where everyone has equal pay and an equal say.

  • Hazelwell Farm is a mixed organic farm in the Vale of Taff, Carmarthenshire producing top quality organic beef and lamb from healthy and contented animals.

We are almost unique in West Wales in that all the meat we sell has been reared on our own farm. The farm has 3 staff and employs a part time butcher and has been selling meat direct since 2006. We grow all our own cereals and forage. We also carry out a wide range of conservation work. Hazelwell Organic Farm produces top quality beef and lamb from healthy and contented animals managed in a sympathetic stress-free environment. It is produced to the highest standards of organic farming laid down by the Soil Association. This includes the avoidance of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, growth regulators, livestock feed additives and GM material. Animal welfare issues such as nutrition, housing, health breeding and rearing are also a high priority. Hazelwell animals are fed only on grass and cereals produced on the farm and the meat is hung for long enough to enhance its quality and flavour. The beef is produced by native breed bulls using traditional breeds selected for their tenderness and great eating quality.

  • Glynhynod Farm (meaning Remarkable Valley in Welsh), the home of Dà Mhìle distillery, has been owned and run by the Savage-Onstwedders since July 1981.

Our name was inspired by the initial bottling which was done to celebrate the millennium, (Dà Mhìle translates to ‘two thousand’ in Scots-Galic/Dwy Fil yn Cymreig).

One further batch of organic whisky was commissioned at Loch Lomond distillery in the year 2000 and in 2012 our vision was realised and we opened the doors to our very own distillery on the farm.

Since then we’ve not only continued making whisky but also other organic spirits, from Dark Skies Rum to Seaweed Gin, all inspired by our history and surroundings.
